OK, here’s the first official blog from my new website: I’ll share an interesting set of avant-guard changes to improvise over. Try this: B7b5#5b9#9 for 4 or 8 bars, then E7b5#5b9#9 for 4 or 8 bars — altering all the notes in the scale you use to match the chord alterations and extensions, and confining yourself primarily to only those seven notes (including the major third, which isn’t altered, and excluding the fourth, which is replaced by the flat 5). So in other words, the scale would be: B C D D# F G A, followed by E F G G# Bb C D. Of course, you can use other chromatic notes as passing notes. Once you get into it, it gives you an interesting free-sounding effect.
